Nicki Minaj's fixation on Cardi B is disturbing
Nicki Minaj seems to be on a never-ending hate-filled warpath, still harboring resentment towards her rival Cardi B, six years after their fued began.
The fued is mostly one-sided at this point though, with Minaj frequently utilizing social media to taunt Cardi B and basically every other female rapper she feels doesn't worship her enough. Megan Thee Stallion and Latto have become targets in her crosshairs, for no other reason than their association with Cardi B.
So when it was announced that Minaj would be the host of the VMAs this year, with Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion also scheduled to perform, it left fans wondering what would go down when all three were in the same room together.
True to form, Minaj fanned the flames, posting several social media rants where she hinted at something "big" going down and laughing maniacally that she had something planned that was going to be a "ki" for her fans.
The prospect of a potential in-person confrontation led fans of all three artists to tune in, resulting in the VMAs enjoying their highest viewership in years.
And as expected, Minaj brought the drama to the VMAs stage.
Wearing a bizarre pink transparent bridal gown and veil, Minaj opened the show being messy. She claimed "someone" had called MTV "petrified" that she would say or do something controversial during the show. She then claimed she had "self control" and would behave.
Later on in the show, Minaj previewed a song from her upcoming album.
The song was yet another "I'm better than everyone", "These bitches is my sons" type song, she no doubt had hoped to perform while her rivals were seated in the audience.
In the song she claims all female rappers look up to her. You have to wonder what new level of narcissism Nicki Minaj has unlocked that makes her think she is the only inspiration to all female rappers out today.
Unfortunately for her, both Cardi B and Megan left the show promptly after their opening performance of their new collaboration "Bongos".
Cardi B was later spotted at an after-party she hosted, steering clear of further drama.
The display from Nicki Minaj is proving yet again how problematic she is. It seems like she is so consumed by hatred for Cardi B that it takes over every aspect of her life.
Her performance only highlighted the ongoing feud and her preoccupation with Cardi B, despite being a 40-year-old mother with other significant concerns, including her husband's ongoing legal issues with his rape victim. Her fixation on Cardi B overshadowed her hosting duties, performances, and music previews.
This episode demonstrated Nicki Minaj's ongoing problem with controversy and her seeming inability to move beyond her feud with Cardi B. Ironically, it worked in Cardi B's favor, as she remained the most talked-about and highest trending female rapper throughout the show. The "Bongos" performance became the most-watched female rap performance of the night.
"Bongos" itself is a fun and sexy track that captures Cardi B's vivacious spirit without resorting to Nicki Minaj's formula of constant "beef" music. It's a refreshing change from the tiresome narrative of "I'm better than all of you" that Minaj often embraces.
Even Minaj's own fans appeared fed up of the constant drama she latches on to, as one fan expressed in a video.
It's perplexing that a successful and wealthy artist like Nicki Minaj would remain so preoccupied with a younger rival. Despite her substantial accomplishments in the rap industry, she appears determined to leave behind a legacy of resentment and bitterness. Or perhaps this is just her marketing strategy for her upcoming album. After six years she is awakening a long-dead beef, simply to drum up interest in her new music.
Cardi B, on the other hand, earned applause for her maturity, delivering a show-stopping performance and then swiftly departing, leaving Nicki Minaj to engage in her self-imposed feud on a global stage for all to witness.
